This is my 3rd digital camera and my first Canon. I moved up from an Olympus Ultra Zoom 2100. The 2100 has 2.1MP 10x optical zoom with image stablization, and lo-res movie mode. The reason I was attracted to the S3 IS was because it offers 6MP with 12x optical zoom and image stabilization, and VGA quality movie mode in stereo. Since purchasing the S3 IS I have not been disappointed.
I also bought a Transcend 4GB SD memory card which can hold about 32 minutes of video, or over 2300 photos in the highest quality. No problems addressing the 4GB memory, or doing a low-level format of the card in the camera.
Shooting both photos and movies is easy. The S3 IS has a separate button that you press with your thumb to start shooting a movie. While you are shooting, you still take snapshots with the shutter button. There are 2 stereo mics built into the front of the camera, along with a software selectable wind filter. While shooting, you can use the zoom feature with no added noise to the movie; it’s very quiet. Image stabilization is still active when shooting a movie.
I think the S3 IS is good enough as both a digital camera and video camera that I no longer need to haul around 2 cameras (digital and video) to every event.

Amazon.com Review
Canon’s PowerShot range of cameras has always been strong, and the PowerShot 400 continues that tradition. The 4 Megapixel Canon PowerShot S400 digital camera is capable of taking still images at 2,272 x 1,704 pixels–enough for a good quality A4 print. Resolutions go down to 640 x 480 for images you might only want to look at digitally. You can also capture video at 320 x 240 and 160 x 120 pixels. The camera is very small indeed–smaller than earlier PowerShot models, and is easily pocket sized. There is what at first might seem a bewildering array of buttons around the casing, but in fact these provide excellent one-button-press access to most of the most used features, such as the 3x optical zoom which goes up to 11x when combined with digital zoom features, the macro mode, settings for the flash and self timer. For more advanced features like changing the shutter speed, which it is great to be able to do on a digital camera; you do need to delve into the LED a little further, though.
Images are stored on CompactFlash card–the largest image can be a couple of MB in size so you’ll need to think big when it comes to CF card size with this camera. The battery is removable, and a spare to carry in the pocket might be a good idea.
Canon supplies a range of desktop software for viewing, editing and making use of your digital images. As with previous PowerShot cameras, one of the tools works with the Stitch Assist mode on the camera itself in the production of panorama shots. Digital cameras get more advanced all the time, but we dare to say that the PowerShot S400 is probably the best pocket sized digital camera we’ve seen. –Sandra Vogel, Amazon.co.uk

Advanced technology in classic design. Stylish, retro design 10.0 Megapixel digital camera with 6x Optical Zoom with Optical Image Stabilizer Technology for steady, long zoom shooting.
PowerShot G7 harks back to classic great camera design with a retro-hip sensibility. The camera’s full 10.0 megapixels of resolution creates stunning, deeply detailed images that allow virtually unlimited enlargement and cropping.
PowerShot G7’s 6x zoom lens gets you right into the action, and incorporates Canon’s most sophisticated optic technology to achieve consistent brightness and clarity throughout the zoom range. Precision engineered lenses reduce and correct aberrations, while Canon’s new SR coating technology (used here for the first time in a digital camera) virtually eliminates ghosting.

Canon packs its newest features into the G7, including the same 10-megapixel CCD that’s in the SD900, its Digic III processor with face-detection focus and a 15fps XGA movie mode, and an f/2.8-to-4.8, 35mm-to-210mm-equivalent (6X) optically stabilized lens. Unfortunately, whoever at Canon decided to jettison raw-format support deserves a whack upside the head. Aside from that, it offers all of the exposure, focus, and shooting controls any enthusiast would want. They include a spot meter, user-selectable focus zones, two custom settings modes, continuous- or shot-only IS settings, manual ISO settings up to 1,600 plus a High mode which reaches up to 3,200, voice annotation, and a hot shoe.

Canon includes version 29 of their Digital Camera Solution software package with the PowerShot G7. The main applications are the ImageBrowser/ZoomBrowser “twins” that come with all PowerShot models. ImageBrowser is for the Mac, while ZoomBrowser is for Windows PCs. The Mac version is not Universal (Intel native), so it’s not as fast as it could be.
Review By Livingroom
Compact and comfortable to hold, handle and use, the PowerShot G7 digital camera is an aesthetic treat as well, harking back to the look and feel of classic Canon cameras. From its retro “wet black matte finish,” leather-toned grip and the detailed knurling and analog-style “click-click” of the camera’s top side ISO Speed Dial and Shooting Mode Dial, to the stylish metallic accents of the body’s aluminum-finish parts and metallic-finish bayonet ring, this PowerShot G7 conveys a sense of “camera-ness” rarely encountered in the world of digital photography. Photo panache and feel appeal not withstanding, the PowerShot G7 remains true to the G-Class tradition by offering an array of the industry’s advanced photographic features.
Review By Pcmag
The G7 features a 6X optical zoom with a 7.4mm-to-44.4mm range (which is equivalent to a 35mm lens with a 35mm-to-210mm zoom) and corresponding maximum f-stops of f/2.8 to f.4.8. With all the carefully placed physical controls, it was a breeze to change camera settings quickly. For example, in manual mode, I easily changed the shutter speed and aperture size by turning the control dial. With many cameras burying more and more functionality within their menu structures, it’s nice to see a lot of manual controls.
Review By Trustedreviews
Canon makes a point in its brochure material for the G7 about its Safety Zoom and Digital Tele-Converter features. Don’t be fooled; these are just another name for digital zoom, and the results produced by either system are equally unsatisfactory. Like all digital zoom systems they simply digitally enlarge the central portion of the image. Even the cleverest software can’t magically create pixels that weren’t there in the original.
Review By Hardwarezone
As part of the design overhaul, the G7 no longer has a chunky handgrip, which is rather weird considering the G7 is actually heavier than the G6 as a result of a more substantial metal housing, a big plus in the way of build quality. In fact, the G7 now resembles more a digital compact than a prosumer camera. The downside is a clear drop in handling confidence but that should mean little when you consider the G7 is now much more portable and easy to carry around than the outgoing G6.

With the PowerShot TX1, Canon takes a futuristic wish-list and makes it a reality. This is an ELPH-sized camera with a whopping 10x optical zoom that not only captures 7.1 megapixel images, but HD movies, too! The stylish vertical design in stainless steel houses plenty of premium advancements including Optical Image Stabilizer Technology, DIGIC III Image Processor, Face Detection Technology and Red-eye Correction. And because you’ll want to take this compact wonder everywhere, it’s equipped with a built-in lens cover and tough new scratch-resistant, anti-reflective coating on the LCD screen.
